Recently, ADNOC announced a significant advancement at the Taweelah Gas Compression Plant with the deployment of a new generation of heavy-duty robots. These robots autonomously navigate red zones—areas so hazardous that human technicians were previously the only option. They can turn industrial valves, operate heavy gauges, and move through environments that pose lethal risks.
With these robots, there is no human exposure and no fatality risk.
Having spent 15 years in HSE, I have written risk assessments for these tasks and participated in pre-task briefings focused on isolation procedures, PPE, and emergency response—all aimed at protecting the individual who had to be physically present. Now, that presence is no longer necessary.
ADNOC's announcement also highlighted their predictive AI tool, HSE Cockpit.ai, which has achieved a 30% reduction in safety incidents by streaming real-time operational data and flagging anomalies before they escalate into accidents. This is not a pilot result; it is live production data from one of the largest energy operators in the world, currently operational in the UAE.
Reading this, I felt a mix of emotions. I recognized the efforts of HSE professionals who built these safety systems and stood in those red zones over the years. Yet, I also felt relief. The core mission of HSE has always been to ensure no one gets hurt. If a robot can perform these tasks more effectively, it is not a threat to my profession; it is a testament to our mission's success.
The role of HSE professionals is evolving. We are transitioning from being the last line of defense in hazardous environments to supervising systems that eliminate human presence in those areas. This shift demands a new skill set.
